Urban streets provide the setting for a wide range of activities, which can be grouped under two broad functions - ‘Link’ and ‘Place’. As a link the street acts as a means of commute from one place to another. As a Place the street becomes a destination in its own right.
The Floating street is a suspended garden in the midst of an educational and residential environment that provides an opportunity to be changed overtime. The street not only encourages community interaction via Gardening but also promotes artist with an eye for graffiti.
The key design idea was to keep the ground void of any obstructions, while providing a comforting environment that could act as a breakout space for the community. A simple mechanism operated with the help of pulleys facilitates movement of the potted plants. If a visitor pulls one of the pots to look at the plant closer, the equivalent pot is lifted. This not only helps in easy maintenance but also increases a sense of ambiguity, hence creating play. The floating tree is supported with the help of tracks that are directly mounted onto the compound wall. Colorful tensile sheets are added as an element that brings in a play of light and shadows. A pattern using rope is created that is inspired from the branches of trees and the patterns found on leaves.
The transformed vibrant street will engage with the community acting as a “link” as well as a “place”.
